This 25-minute course is part of a specialised series designed to equip professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to design for daylight effectively in compliance with the New Zealand Daylight Quality Lighting Standard (DQLS). The course focuses on the practical application of daylighting principles to achieve compliance with the DQLS while enhancing visual comfort and optimising building performance. Participants will gain hands-on experience in setting up, simulating, and analysing daylighting models to ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
Course Structure:
The course begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of daylighting design, emphasising the importance of adhering to DQLS provisions. Participants will explore key concepts such as Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI), applicable floor area definitions, and compliance thresholds. They will also learn to configure daylight simulations, define applicable areas, exclude non-learning spaces, and adjust surface reflectivity and properties for specific zones such as classrooms and breakout areas. This session provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to prepare models for daylight performance analysis.
The final session focuses on advanced simulation analysis and reporting. This segment emphasises evaluating UDI metrics, identifying areas of non-compliance, and proposing design adjustments to improve daylight distribution. Participants will learn how to generate detailed reports that summarise daylighting performance against DQLS criteria, ensuring clarity and alignment with regulatory standards. The session also covers fine-tuning simulation parameters to enhance overall building performance and compliance.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Understand and apply daylighting principles within the framework of the DQLS.
Gain proficiency in setting up and configuring daylighting models to meet compliance requirements.
Develop skills in running and interpreting simulations, particularly with respect to UDI metrics.
Explore advanced analysis techniques, including evaluating specific zones and refining design details.
Learn to produce comprehensive compliance reports that meet the DQLS standards.
Course Completion:
By the end of this course, participants will have a robust understanding of how to design and simulate daylight performance in compliance with DQLS standards. They will be prepared to confidently manage daylighting strategies for their projects, ensuring both visual comfort and regulatory compliance. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion.
