This 15-minute course is designed to provide professionals with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to size HVAC systems effectively using design day simulations. The course focuses on leveraging design days to calculate heating and cooling loads, ensuring systems are appropriately sized for reliability and efficiency under extreme weather conditions.
Course Structure:
This single-session course begins with an introduction to the concept of design days, representing extreme weather scenarios such as the hottest day of summer or the coldest night of winter. Participants will learn to use these scenarios to calculate peak heating and cooling demands, ensuring HVAC systems meet performance requirements. The session covers setting up simplified models with ideal loads, defining zones, and configuring parameters such as glazing properties, outdoor provisions, and operational schedules.
The session progresses to running simulations and interpreting results, focusing on analysing key metrics such as peak loads, temperature profiles, and humidity levels during both summer and winter design days. Participants will gain insights into understanding solar loads, occupancy schedules, and HVAC node data, ensuring accurate assessments of system performance. Finally, the session demonstrates how to adjust design parameters and evaluate unmet hours to refine HVAC sizing, providing actionable guidance for optimising system reliability and efficiency.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Understand the concept of design days and their application in HVAC sizing.
Learn to configure and run HVAC simulations using ideal loads for peak demand calculations.
Analyse simulation outputs, including temperature moderation, solar loads, and peak demands.
Evaluate and adjust design parameters to improve HVAC system performance and reliability.
Course Completion:
By the end of this course, participants will have the skills to confidently size HVAC systems using design day simulations. They will be able to model, simulate, and refine system configurations to ensure optimal performance under extreme weather conditions. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion.
