This 66-minute course is part of a comprehensive series aimed at equipping professionals with essential skills to utilise the J1V5 verification method for compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia. The course provides a practical guide to setting up, simulating, and analysing building models using the Speckel platform, focusing on energy performance, thermal comfort, and compliance with J1V5 requirements.
Course Structure:
The course begins by introducing the J1V5 verification method as an alternative performance solution pathway within the NCC. Participants will learn about the basic structure of J1V5, which involves understanding performance requirements related to heating and cooling loads. The session covers the importance of correctly categorising building spaces, such as habitable and non-habitable areas, and setting up the initial model within the Speckel platform. Key concepts include defining groupings, tagging spaces appropriately, and understanding the compliance criteria for J1V5. By the end of this session, participants will have a foundational understanding of the J1V5 approach and how to begin a compliant model setup.
The second session delves deeper into setting up and refining building models in Speckel, focusing on detailed simulations and airflow network configurations. Participants will learn how to model individual apartments, assign spaces to appropriate groups, and configure internal conditions such as air walls and window openability. The session emphasises the significance of correctly defining natural ventilation settings and how they influence thermal performance and compliance with J1V5. This session provides hands-on experience in adjusting glazing properties, modifying insulation values, and setting up detailed airflow networks to optimise building performance. Participants will also explore how different parameters affect the heating and cooling loads and gain insights into strategies for improving design compliance.
The final session focuses on interpreting simulation results and generating comprehensive compliance reports. Participants will learn to assess and compare the proposed and reference building models, focusing on heating and cooling load outcomes and how these align with J1V5 requirements. The session covers advanced analysis techniques, such as tweaking glazing and shading multipliers to enhance performance, and emphasises the importance of balancing solar heat gain with thermal comfort. Participants will explore how to adjust design parameters to achieve compliance and ensure energy efficiency. Detailed instruction is provided on generating reports that summarise the performance against J1V5 criteria, highlighting key areas for improvement and compliance status.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Understand and apply the J1V5 verification method within the context of the NCC.
Gain proficiency in setting up and configuring building models in Speckel with a focus on energy performance and thermal comfort.
Develop skills in running and interpreting simulations related to heating and cooling loads and natural ventilation.
Explore advanced analysis techniques, including evaluating the impact of material choices on compliance outcomes.
Learn to produce comprehensive reports that summarise simulation results and compliance with J1V5 standards.
Course Completion: By the end of this course, participants will have a robust understanding of how to utilise the J1V5 verification method for building design and simulation. They will be equipped to manage energy performance and ensure compliance with the NCC using the Speckel platform. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion, demonstrating their expertise in J1V5 modelling and compliance analysis.
