This 47-minute course is designed to provide professionals with the essential knowledge and practical skills to assess and mitigate overheating risks in residential buildings using CIBSE TM59. The course focuses on leveraging advanced simulation tools and methodologies to optimise thermal comfort and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Course Structure:
This two-session course begins with an introduction to the CIBSE TM59 methodology, covering the criteria for assessing overheating risks in naturally ventilated and mechanically cooled homes. The first session explores setting up models in Speckel, defining zones, and configuring inputs such as occupancy profiles, heat loads, ventilation parameters, and weather files. Participants will also learn how to enable the airflow network for accurate natural ventilation modelling.
The second session delves into running simulations and analysing results. Participants will interpret key metrics, including adaptive comfort compliance, operative temperatures, and ventilation effectiveness. The course highlights common causes of overheating, such as high solar gain coefficients, limited ventilation, and excessive internal heat loads. Strategies for improving designs are covered, including optimising window openability, incorporating shading, and enhancing natural ventilation to reduce overheating risks effectively.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Understand the principles of overheating risk assessment using CIBSE TM59.
Configure simulation models, including zoning, heat loads, ventilation, and weather files.
Analyse simulation results, such as compliance with adaptive comfort and operative temperature criteria.
Identify design improvements, such as increasing ventilation, reducing solar gains, and optimising material properties.
Apply best practices for mitigating overheating risks in residential building designs.
Course Completion:
By the end of this course, participants will have the confidence and expertise to assess overheating risks and apply CIBSE TM59 methodologies effectively. They will be equipped to simulate, analyse, and refine building designs to enhance thermal comfort and ensure compliance. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion.
