Last updated
This 28-minute course is designed to provide professionals with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to assess daylight access for living and bedroom spaces in compliance with the BESS Daylight Access standard. The course focuses on configuring daylight factor simulations, analysing results, and optimising designs to meet compliance thresholds for daylight performance.
Course Structure:
The first session introduces the BESS Daylight Access standard and its requirements for living and bedroom areas. Participants will learn to set up daylight factor simulations, including defining zones, assigning purposes (daytime or night-time), and configuring critical inputs such as reflectivity, plane heights, and boundary offsets. The session also covers the use of grid settings, sky models, and other parameters that influence simulation accuracy. By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how to prepare models for effective daylight factor analysis.
The second session focuses on running simulations, analysing results, and optimising designs for compliance. Participants will evaluate daylight factor distributions, identify areas of non-compliance, and explore the impact of adjustments such as grid resolution and sky models (e.g., uniform versus overcast) on simulation outcomes. The session also demonstrates practical techniques for generating detailed reports, including visual data presentation and summary tables, to effectively communicate results to stakeholders.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Understand the BESS Daylight Access standard and its requirements for living and bedroom spaces.
Learn to configure and run daylight factor simulations with appropriate input parameters.
Analyse simulation outputs, including daylight factor distributions, compliance thresholds, and grid settings.
Refine simulation parameters and adjust designs to improve daylight performance and compliance.
Develop skills in producing detailed daylight assessment reports for stakeholder review.
Course Completion:
By the end of this course, participants will have the skills to confidently assess and optimise daylight access for living and bedroom spaces. They will be able to model, simulate, and report daylight performance in compliance with the BESS Daylight Access standard. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion.
