Moisture

This 68-minute course is part of a comprehensive series designed to equip professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to manage moisture effectively in building design and construction. The course focuses on the practical application of moisture management principles within the frameworks of the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia and the New Zealand Building Code. By leveraging the Speckel platform, participants will gain hands-on experience in setting up, simulating, and analysing building models to ensure they meet stringent moisture management standards.

Course Structure:

The course begins with an introduction to the basics of moisture management, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the NCC and New Zealand Building Code provisions. Participants will explore key concepts such as condensation management, vapour permeance, and mould growth index.

In the second session, the course delves into the intricacies of running simulations within Speckel. Participants will learn how to model various wall assemblies, adjust cavity ventilation rates, and select appropriate vapour barriers. The session emphasises the importance of accurately interpreting simulation results, particularly concerning mould growth potential and the effectiveness of different materials in moisture management. Participants will run multiple simulations, exploring the impact of different configurations on overall building performance.

The final session covers advanced simulation analysis and reporting. This segment focuses on comparing different wall assemblies and understanding the implications of various material choices on moisture management. Participants will learn how to generate detailed reports that summarize the performance of building systems against moisture management criteria, including compliance with the NCC and New Zealand Building Code. The session also covers how to adjust simulation parameters to improve building performance and ensure long-term durability.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and apply moisture management principles within the context of the NCC and New Zealand Building Code.

  • Gain proficiency in setting up and configuring building models in Speckel with a focus on moisture management.

  • Develop skills in running and interpreting moisture management simulations, particularly concerning mould growth and vapour permeance.

  • Explore advanced analysis techniques, including detailed evaluations of wall assemblies and the impact of material choices on moisture control.

  • Learn to produce comprehensive compliance reports that meet the standards of regulatory bodies in Australia and New Zealand.

Course Completion:

By the end of this course, participants will have a robust understanding of how to apply moisture management strategies in building design and simulation. They will be prepared to confidently manage the moisture performance of their projects using Speckel, ensuring compliance with the relevant building codes. Participants who complete the course and achieve an 80% pass mark on the final quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion.
